The Washington DC State Board of Education provides its boarding school students with the opportunity to develop the academic, social, and emotional skills necessary to make a smooth transition from high school boarding school to a post-secondary educational institution. The Washington, D.C. school system (prekindergarten through grade 12) operates within districts governed by locally elected school boards and superintendents.
High school boarding school students wanting a high school diploma must complete 24 Carnegie Units before graduation. The following Carnegie Units in the following subjects are required: English, Mathematics; must include Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra II at a minimum, Science; must include three lab sciences, Social Studies; must consist of World History 1 and 2, United States History; United States Government, and District of Columbia History, World Language, Art, Music, Physical Education, and electives. In addition to the 24 Carnegie Units, 100 hours of volunteer community service should be completed. The specific volunteer community service projects should be established by the Local Education Agency (LEA). Boarding school students should talk with their school’s counselor about what they need to graduate.
