The Connecticut State Department of Education promises an excellent education to equip every child, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, family wealth, zip code, or disability status, with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in college, careers, and civic life. The state provides guidance and leadership to school districts to support public, private, and boarding schools where great teachers and leaders hold high expectations for all Connecticut students.
The Connecticut State Department of Education supports its school districts with a rigorous and relevant curriculum, prekindergarten through 12th grade. Curricular development takes place at the district level through meaningful, ongoing, data-informed discussions involving districtwide educators.
Connecticut state provides resources to include frameworks with standards and grade-level expectations, templates for curriculum, and sample lessons and assessments. State-provided professional development, supplementary resources, and Bureau of Teaching and Learning staff are also available to assist.
The Connecticut Core Standards, adopted by the State Board of Education in 2010, provide teachers, students, and families with clear expectations of what a boarding school student should know and do at each grade level. The standards focus on English Language Arts, Mathematics, and literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, & Technical Subjects in Grades 6-12. School districts develop local curricula based on these college and career standards. Taken together, standards, high-quality curriculum, and instruction prepare boarding school students to meet the demands of 21st Century study, work, and life.
To graduate from a high school boarding school, Connecticut recommends that high school boarding school students earn 25 credits. Among these credit requirements are English, Math, Science, Social Studies, World Language, Physical Education, Art, and core electives.
