John Dewey Academy is a co-ed college preparatory boarding school that was founded by Dr. Thomas E. Bratter in 1985. It is located in Great Barrington, Massachusetts and is a fully accredited school that houses 25 high school students that range in age from 15-21.
Most of the students are high-maintenance adolescents who have not benefited from traditional behavior and educational environments. They are not treated with mind-altering medications but instead are encouraged to engage in positive relationships with their peers in classes of about six students. Students normally are enrolled for 18 months or sometimes longer.
