If you are here, it’s because you are searching for an art school where you can immerse yourself in your craft, among similarly talented peers. There are eight such boarding schools for the arts in the United States.
In-State vs Out-of-State
If you are not from those five states, you may still be able to attend, but will pay out-of-state tuition.
Which makes getting into any a rather competitive thing, especially considering one of the three is for girls only.

- Alabama School of Fine Arts – Grades 7-12
The Alabama School of Fine Arts, located in Birmingham, Alabama, is a co-educational public school for grades 7-12.
- Idyllwild Arts Academy – Grades 9-12, PG
The Idyllwild Arts Academy, located in the San Jacinto Mountains of California an hour’s drive from Palm Springs, is a boarding high school.
- Louisiana School for Math, Science & Arts – Grades 10-12
The School for Math, Science & Arts is only the second state school of its kind. Founded due to the efforts of State Rep. Jimmy D. Long and Robert A. Alost.
- Walnut Hill School – Grades 9-12
Walnut Hill School is a coeducational high school for the performing arts, located in Natick, Massachusetts. The school was founded in 1893.
- Interlochen Arts Academy – Grades 9-12
Interlochen Arts Academy is one of the most prestigious boarding fine arts high schools in the country. It is located on a 1200 acres in northwest Michigan.
- Mississippi School of the Arts – Grades 11-12
Mississippi School of the Arts (MSA) is located in Brookhaven and offer grades 11-12. Approximately sixty miles south of Jackson.
- North Carolina School of the Arts – Grades 9-12
The UNC School of the Arts was founded in 1963. Today this publicly-funded school has over 1,100 students enrolled in grades 9-12 and PG.
- Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities – N/A
Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ philosophy is to foster an apprenticeship style of instruction in the arts.
